Customer File Checklist

Belmont International Inc, is committed to producing high-quality printing from our customers electronic documents. However, we realize that the files submitted to us have been created by designers with a wide variety of experience and skill level. To try and minimize your prepress expenses, the prepress department has provided this list of guidelines for your designer. This same list is checked against when our prepress department processes your files. If we find a problem pertaining to one of these points during preflight, you will be notified by our production department and advised on how to proceed.

Document Guidelines

  • We fully support Adobe PDF files as long as they follow the guidelines below:
    • All PDF images must be embedded.
    • All fonts must be embedded AND subset.
    • All crop marks must be AT LEAST .13 away from trim.
    • Bleed must be visible on the PDF page.
  • We prefer text page PDFs to be distilled as single pages (instead of multi-page spreads) and stitched together into multiple-page documents. PDF files are by nature less alterable than layout files, so be prepared to supply new PDFs for any corrections.
  • We have several Mac stations with copies of Quark Xpress, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign. We also keep a few other layout programs on-hand, including the now-discontinued Adobe PageMaker line and some older versions of Freehand. Mac-compatible fonts and images must be sent with the Mac layout.
  • We have a PC station that has several versions of Quark Xpress and Adobe InDesign. PC-compatible fonts and images must be sent with the PC layout.
  • Photoshop (or any other image-editing software), Microsoft Publisher and Microsoft Office programs SHOULD NOT be used to make page layouts. We do have technology to process them, but cannot guarantee the best results if these programs are used.

Layout Guidelines

  • Verify the overall page count and page size with your CSR, including cover spine width (if applicable). If you have a project with a difficult layout (such as a case wrap cover), request a copy of the layout diagram be sent to you.
  • All pages, unless specified otherwise, should have 1/8 bleed.
  • All live type and graphics should be 3/16 inside the trim.
  • All colors and graphics must be based on CMYK, spot color or gray scale color models. RGB, LAB or index color images will not process through our RIPs, and will be converted to CMYK by default.
  • If spot colors are used, please base your colors on the Pantone Matching System (PMS) spot colors. Please do not use All or Registration spot colors in your design - these are designated for crop or registration marks.
  • Ink density of images should be no higher than 280%.
  • Actual image resolution should be above 150 dpi.
  • Images should be saved as an EPS, JPG or TIF format. AI, PICT & GIF will not process through our RIPs, and will need to be re-saved.
  • If images are created using links to other images or fonts, please make sure all fonts and images are embedded within the larger image.
  • All lines need to be at least .2 points thick for our plates to hold them.
  • Thin lines or small type color should be created with no more than two inks to prevent registration problems.
  • All fonts should be sent with a screen and a postscript (printer) font.
  • We encourage the customer to at least send laser proofs. If we have something to compare to, we are more likely to catch errors early on.
  • If there are questions about any of these guidelines, feel free to contact our electronic production department for assistance. Kelly Morrison or Cliff Barsi at 727-533-8607.
